Getting Ready to Write

Hello grade five! Welcome to your online writing lessons. 
I suggest working on two writing lessons per week but the dates indicated for each lesson are just a guidepost. Please work on your writing when it works best for you and for your family.  


Lesson 1

Date: Tuesday March 31, 2020
Topic: Prose vs Poetry
Required Resources: Literacy Notebook or a piece of lined paper, and a pencil or pen to write with.
Overview: In preparation for writing poetry, we begin by discussing what makes a poem a poem. Students will demonstrate their understanding by  completing a Venn diagram to compare prose and poetry writing.

Lesson 2

Date: Thursday April 2, 2020
Topic: Literary Devices 1 - Figurative Language 
Required Resources: Literacy Notebook or a piece of lined paper, a pencil or pen to write with and highlighters. 
Overview: A focus on reviewing and/or introducing basic Figurative Language Devices such as metaphor, simile, personification and hyperbole. Students will create thier own examples of each device.

Lesson 3

Date: Tuesday April 7, 2020
Topic: Literary Devices 2 - Imagery
Required Resources: Literacy Notebook or a piece of lined paper, a pencil or pen to write with and highlighters.
Overview: A focus on reviewing and introducing the literary device of imagery. Students will create their own examples of each type of imagery and write a paragraph utilizing this literary device.

Lesson 4

Date: Thursday April 9, 2020
Topic: Poetry Exploration of "The Red Wheelbarrow" 
Required Resources: Literacy Notebook or piece of lined paper and a pen or pencil. 
Overview: We will read and explore William Carlos Williams' poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" as inspiration for writing our own poetry.

Lesson 5

Date: Tuesday April 21, 2020
Topic: Sound Devices 1 - Repetition, Alliteration, Rhyme, Onomatopoeia
Required Resources: Literacy Notebook or piece of lined paper, writing utensil, highlighters, coloured pencils or felts. 
Overview: Students will define and explore the sound devices of repetition, alliteration, rhyme, and onomatopoeia. Students will apply their knowledge of sound devices to the poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost.

Lesson 6

Date: Thursday April 23, 2020
Topic: Sound Devices 2 - Types of Rhyme and Rhyme Scheme
Required Resources: Literacy Notebook or lined paper, writing utensil like a pen or a pencil and coloured pencils or felts..
Overview: Students will explore and define slant rhyme and rhyme scheme. Students will apply the concept of rhyme scheme to various examples of poetry correctly - first with guidance and then independently. Students will end the lesson by writing their own poem!

Lesson 7

Date: Tuesday April 28, 2020
Topic: Small Poems, Shape Poems and Sound Poems
Overview: In this "Poetry Extravaganza" we will sample small poems that focus on the ordinary objects, places and entities in everyday life; shape poems (or concrete poetry) that convey meaning not only through the carefully chosen words in a poem but also the arrangement of the words into images on the page; and finally we will delve into poetry inspired by the soundscape around us. Students will end the lesson by writing a few poems of their own utilizing these specific techniques. They will play with poetry! 

Lesson 8

Date: Thursday April 30, 2020
Topic: Haikus and Cinquains
Overview:This lesson focuses on writing poems with a clear structure to follow. Students will define and explore examples of both Haiku and Cinquain poetry before writing their own poems that follow these formats. Students are encouraged to take time brainstorming, rewriting, and revising their initial ideas in order to construct poems that convey a unified message. 

Lesson 9

Date: Tuesday May 5, 2020
Topic: Love That Poetry
Overview: Students will explore the poem "Love That Boy" by Walter Dean Meyers and the inspired poem "Love That Dog" included in Sharon Creech's novel by the same name. After closely examining the poem and its structure students will end the lesson by writing their own "Love That..." poem. 

Lesson 10

Date: Thursday May 7, 2020
Topic: Performing and Presenting Poetry
Overview: We explore strategies to present both visually and orally to enhance the main idea and message of individual poems. Examples will be showcased and students will end the lesson by choosing one of their own poems to enhance with a visual and share via FlipGrid.
